Big Bang Votive is an ongoing project built from three core elements: an interactive story-sharing ritual, a growing installation of paintings, and an audioscape.

Anyone may participate in Big Bang Votive. I invite you to share a story with me of what sparks delight or inspires love in your life. After the telling, we discuss what object you would like me to paint as a symbol for your story.

Each symbol is depicted against a starry field. Painted in egg tempera, I begin every piece with magenta, then multiple shades of greens, purples, greys, and blues, building the surface with 10 - 20 layers of transparent color washes. I sometimes sprinkle dirt, glitter, or salt between layers and flick light spatterings of white at intervals to simulate a starry cosmos. While new symbols are continually added as stories are shared, I maintain a large number of panels with a cosmic backdrop, thus reflecting the limitless capacity of the universe to have room for all of our stories.
